Do You Need Nail Glue for Press-On Nails? An Honest 2026 Guide
Do You Need Nail Glue for Press-On Nails? An Honest 2026 Guide
Written by Paul, SHANGMENG Application Specialist — with 20+ years in press-on nail manufacturing and application. Fact-checked April 2026.
Quick answer: It depends on what press-on nails you bought. Brands like SHANGMENG include 24 pre-applied adhesive tabs in every kit — you literally don't need glue. Other brands (especially older paper-box products) do require liquid nail glue sold separately. Below: how to tell which camp you're in, and what to buy if you actually need glue.
I'll keep this guide honest: we make soft gel press-on nails, and we don't sell liquid nail glue. So I have zero incentive to push you toward one product or another. What you'll get here is a straight answer to the question Google brought you with — including the part where you should probably skip our products entirely if your situation calls for liquid glue.
Let's break it down.
The TL;DR: 4 user types, 4 different answers
Before you spend 10 minutes reading: find yourself in this table.
| Your situation | Do you need nail glue? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You're new to press-on nails and just browsing | Probably not. | Buy a kit that includes adhesive tabs (like SHANGMENG or most 2025+ brands). |
| You bought SHANGMENG or a similar modern kit | No — tabs are included. | Use the 24 tabs in your kit. Skip to the application section below. |
| You bought a paper-box / traditional press-on (e.g., some older drugstore kits) | Yes. | You need to buy liquid nail glue separately. See "where to buy" below. |
| You want 2+ weeks of wear from your press-ons | Optional. | Tabs last ~7 days; adding a drop of liquid glue boosts wear to ~14 days. |
| You're a salon professional doing gel extensions | Yes (but different product). | You need gel builder, not press-on glue. This guide isn't for you. |
If you want the details — especially if you're not sure which camp you're in — keep reading.
Why this question is confusing: there are two completely different "glue" systems
The confusion exists because the term "press-on nails" covers two very different adhesion technologies, and they're often sold in the same aisle.
System 1: Pressure-sensitive adhesive tabs (the modern way)
Modern press-on nail kits — including SHANGMENG, Glamnetic, KISS imPRESS, and most 2024-2025 brands — ship with pre-applied adhesive tabs or double-sided sticky squares already matched to your nail sizes.
How they work: - The tab is a medical-grade pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA), similar to what dentists use on temporary crowns - You peel a backing paper, press the tab onto your natural nail, peel the second backing, then press the artificial nail on top - No wet glue, no cure time, no fumes
The AAD recommends adhesive-tab press-ons as one of the lower-risk artificial nail options, noting that when removed correctly with soaking rather than prying, they cause minimal disruption to the natural nail plate.
Wear time: 5–10 days typical, up to 14 with good prep
Removal: Soak in warm soapy water for 10 minutes → lift gently
Best for: 95% of casual users. Safe, reusable, damage-free.
System 2: Liquid nail glue (the traditional way)
Older or cheaper press-on kits — especially the paper-box variety from drugstores, or bulk "fake nail" packs — come without any adhesive. You have to buy nail glue in a small 2 ml bottle separately, or some kits include one tiny tube.
How it works: - Cyanoacrylate-based (same family as super glue, but formulated for skin/nail safety) - You apply a drop to each nail, press the artificial nail down, hold 10 seconds - Chemical bond sets in ~30 seconds, full cure in 5 minutes
Wear time: 10–14 days typical, up to 3 weeks if you're careful
Removal: Requires acetone or extended soaking; easier to damage natural nails
Best for: Longer wear, loose nails, repair situations
How to tell which kind you bought
Look at your press-on kit. You want to find the answer to: is there any adhesive inside the box already?
Open your kit and look for:
- Small square sheets with numbers — these are pre-sized adhesive tabs. You have the tab system. No glue needed.
- A small 2 ml bottle with a brush — that's liquid nail glue. You have the glue system. Use what's included.
- Neither of the above — the box only contains the artificial nails themselves. You need to buy glue separately.
The SHANGMENG case: tabs included, no glue bottle
SHANGMENG soft gel press-on kits (browse our Cat Eye nail collection, Almond shape kits, or French tip styles) come with:
- 24 soft gel nails in 12 sizes
- 24 pre-applied adhesive tabs (one per nail)
- 1 wood cuticle stick
- 1 mini nail file / buffer
- Prep alcohol wipes
What's NOT in the box: liquid nail glue. We made a deliberate choice not to include it because our soft gel + tab system is designed to work without it, and including glue would mean damage risk for users who don't need it.
If you want longer wear from a SHANGMENG kit, see the "optional glue upgrade" section below.
Where to buy liquid nail glue (if you actually need it)
Since we don't sell liquid nail glue, here's an honest buying guide. These are the brands nail techs we know trust, ranked by my experience:
Best overall: Kiss Maximum Speed Brush-On Glue
- Where to buy: Amazon, Target, Walmart, Ulta — roughly $3–5
- Why: Brush applicator (easier than squeeze-tube), dries in 5 seconds, good for 2-week wear
- Downside: Strong fumes; work in ventilated area
Best for sensitive nails: Nailene Ultra Quick 7-Second Nail Glue
- Where to buy: Amazon, drugstore chains — around $4–6
- Why: Lower cyanoacrylate concentration, gentler on nail plate
- Downside: Less durable (~10 days vs 14)
Best for repair/long-wear: IBD 5-Second Nail Glue
- Where to buy: Amazon, Sally Beauty — around $8–10
- Why: Professional-grade, used in salons for gel/acrylic repair
- Downside: Overkill for casual press-on wear
What to avoid
- Super glue (non-cosmetic): Yes, it's the same chemical family, but cosmetic nail glue is formulated with plasticizers that make it safer for nail plates and less likely to split when your nail flexes. Don't use hardware-store super glue on your nails even if it's cheaper.
- Any "nail glue" that smells fruity or sweet: Legitimate nail glues have a sharp, slightly acrid cyanoacrylate smell. Fragranced versions often use methyl methacrylate (MMA), which is banned in nail products in many US states for a reason. The FDA's nail care products guidance explains exactly why MMA was restricted — it over-bonds to the nail plate, making removal painful and damaging.
We don't sell any of these. Buy from Amazon or the brands' own sites.

How to apply press-on nails without glue (the SHANGMENG tabs method)
If you're using a kit with adhesive tabs, here's the full 6-step process:
Step 1: Prep your natural nails
- File your natural nails flat at the tip (no curved edges)
- Push back cuticles gently with the wood stick included in your kit
- Wipe each nail with the alcohol pad (removes oil — critical for adhesion)
- Air dry for 60 seconds
Step 2: Match sizes
- Place each press-on nail over your natural nail without peeling any backings
- Pick the size that covers your entire nail plate without overhanging the skin
- Lay them out in the kit tray in the order you'll apply
Step 3: Peel the tab backing (first side)
- Grip the adhesive tab's paper backing with tweezers or a pin
- Peel only the smaller side — the side that faces your natural nail
- Don't touch the exposed adhesive with your fingers (oil contamination)
Step 4: Press onto your natural nail
- Center the tab on your nail bed
- Press firmly for 10 seconds
- Peel the remaining paper backing (the one facing up)
Step 5: Attach the press-on nail
- Align the press-on nail with your cuticle (not your skin)
- Press straight down for 15 seconds
- Hold firmly — no wiggling or sliding
Step 6: Let it cure for 10 minutes
- Avoid water for the first hour
- No hot showers for 2 hours
- Your tabs are now at full bond strength
Total time for a full hand: about 10 minutes once you've done it twice.
Optional: using liquid glue WITH SHANGMENG tabs for 2-week wear
Some of our customers want longer wear than the ~7 days the tabs alone provide. Here's the hybrid method — use it only if you really need 2+ weeks:
- Complete Steps 1–4 from above (prep + tab adhesion)
- Before pressing the artificial nail on, add one small drop of nail glue to the top of the tab
- Press the nail on and hold 30 seconds (longer than tabs-only)
- Cure for 20 minutes, not 10
Trade-off: longer wear but harder removal. You'll need acetone or 15+ minutes of warm water soaking to remove. Only do this if you're sure you can leave the nails on for the full wear period.

FAQ: the questions we get most often
Do press-on nails ruin your natural nails?
Not if you follow two rules: never pull them off (always soak and slide), and don't leave them on longer than the wear period (7 days for tabs, 14 for glue). Damage happens when users peel nails off, taking a layer of the nail plate with them.
How long do press-on nails last with tabs vs glue?
- Adhesive tabs only: 5–10 days average (up to 14 with good prep and gentle hand use)
- Liquid glue only: 10–14 days average (up to 21 in salon conditions)
- Hybrid (tabs + glue): 14–16 days average
Can I reuse press-on nails if I don't use glue?
Yes — this is one of the biggest advantages of the tabs system. SHANGMENG soft gel press-ons can be reused 2–3 times if you remove them carefully. Wipe off the old adhesive with a cotton ball soaked in alcohol, then reapply with a new tab.
What's the difference between nail glue and super glue?
Both are cyanoacrylate-based. Cosmetic nail glue has plasticizers and slower-curing formulations that make it more flexible (less likely to shatter when your nail flexes) and less damaging to the nail plate. Super glue is rigid and can cause nails to crack or split. Don't substitute.
Are there any press-on nails that need neither tabs nor glue?
No — some form of adhesion is always required, whether it's tabs, glue, gel builder, or a hybrid. The tabs system is the closest to "glue-free" because you don't handle any wet chemicals.
Is the SHANGMENG tab system waterproof?
Yes for normal contact (hand washing, showers after the initial 2-hour cure). Extended soaking (baths longer than 20 minutes, swimming, hot tubs) will soften the adhesive and shorten wear time. If you swim regularly, use the hybrid method with liquid glue.
The honest bottom line
If you searched "do you need nail glue for press-on nails," here's my direct answer as someone who's been making these for 20 years:
For 80% of users, no — you should buy a kit with pre-applied adhesive tabs and skip liquid glue entirely. It's easier, less damaging, and perfectly durable for a week of wear.
For the 20% who genuinely need liquid glue (traditional kits without tabs, extended wear, nail repair), buy Kiss or Nailene from Amazon and skip the fancier options.
And if you're ready to try a soft gel press-on kit that comes with everything needed — tabs, sizes, prep tools — we'd love for you to consider one of ours:
